Text: Heywood, Andrew. Political Ideologies, An Introduction. Palgrave MacMillan, New York. 2007

Catalogue Description: A survey of selected political theorists and concepts and/or issues from Plato to the present. Includes analysis of theoretical approaches used to explain, instruct, and justify the distribution of political power in societies.

Student Learning Outcome:
SLO#1. compare and contrast various political theories and theorists.
SLO#2. recognize fundamental political concepts as expressed by major political thinkers.
SLO#3. recognize concepts and principles of political thought in the routine operations of political systems.

Description: Political Systems are built around fundamental concepts and values.  The specific set of values and concepts and even the meaning of these elements show considerable variation from system to system.  The purpose of this course is to examine the ideas at the root of politics and how those ideas vary form one system to another.

Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial to the student's success in the course.  It will not be possible to make up the majority of the assignments after they are scheduled. Repeated absence may lead to a student being dropped from the course.

Grading:  Evaluation of the student's performance in the course will be based upon four components.

For Quizzes and Exams, no electronic device of any kind is allowed.

1) Quizzes:  There will be four quizzes during the term. At the end of the semester the scores from individual quizzes will be totaled, curved and represent 60% of the final grade.

2) Term Paper.  A paper is required.  The assignment will relate to course concepts and the Heywood text.  Details will be distributed the second week of class.  The grade for this assignment will contribute 20% of the final grade.  The paper is due on or before November 25.  There is a penalty (10% /week) for late work.

3) Final:  There will be a final exam, a two hour in class essay, which will provide the remaining 20%.  To prepare students will choose two of the final five ideologies, about which they will write.

4) Class discussion will be a structured and significant part of the learning experience.  Reflecting this, consistent and constructive class participation is often considered in determining a student's final grade.

Missed Exams: Should a quiz or the mid-term be missed the student must take the make-up exam.  You may only make-up ONE assignment.  If you miss more than one, you will receive an "F" for the other missed work.  A student must request the make-up exam which will be given during Finals Week and will be a comprehensive two hour exam.  A student cannot score higher on the make-up than an average of their other exams.  If a student misses the make-up they will receive an "F" for the missed assignment.

Office Hours: The instructor is available in his office (FO 151) at many times during the week.  Please check the schedule posted in the classroom or outside the office.  You can leave a message at 685-1230 Ext: 2868 or by e-mail at smacdoug@dvc.edu
